amedee's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The death of Orly Happy Easter everyone. Remember the reason we celebrate. Last Tuesday our chickens first chicks hatched. Today on of the five died. I saw my dog walking out of our shed where we keep our chickens and I saw the mother chicken running away with only four chicks in tow. So I knew something had happened to the fifth chick and my dog did it. I ran into the shed, tears already streaming down my face, hoping that the little chick was okay but knowing that he wasn't, and i saw the chick just laying there on the ground with his mouth open struggling to breathe. There was no blood. He was just slobbered all over. My dog Malcome must of tried to eat it and didn't. I wouldn't have been so upset if he killed one of the big chickens but the death of the little chick just broke my heart..I just held him in my hands and he took his last big breath. He was so helpless. He opened his little beak to take a big breathe. His eyes we closing. I gave him a little kiss on his fussy head and burried him under a pile of twigs. The mother chicken sat by the twigs hoping he was going to get up and follow her. I felt so bad. I had to move the chick so she wouldn't know where he was, so she wouldn't neglect her other four chickies. I was sobbing over the death of a little creature who was a little over two inches high. Rest in peace sweet little peeper. I should name him..um..how about Orly? It means "light" in Hebrew. Anyways, Easter was a happy day besides that. They have a little chick in heaven today.
